Dogs Die at the End of Chains as Cold Sweeps the Nation

Dogs Die at the End of Chains as Cold Sweeps the Nation

Nonprofit Urges Citizens to Report Abuse/Media to Remind People to Bring Companions Out of the Cold

18 January, 2007, Altoona, PA — Dogs Deserve Better, a national nonprofit working to bring dogs into the home and family, has received reports of dogs dying as a result of being left chained or penned in frigid temperatures. "Two pitbulls were removed from a home in Boulder County, CO, last week after neighbors called animal control. The dogs had been left outside in extremely cold temperatures for several days. One of the dogs suffered from frostbite and the other had to be euthanized because of the severity of its injuries," the Boulder Humane Society said.

This scenario is repeating itself across America with dogs whose stories will never be told and whose deaths will go unnoticed, unmourned, and unjustified.

As cold sweeps as far south as Texas, San Antonio drew press reports of a dog chained outside without shelter. “He’s suffering. He cries a lot,” said neighbor Josie Jeffries, “At nighttime, he starts crying. And he’s not barking, he’s crying. Officers came and they saw the dog tied up outside freezing. They’ve talked to the owner and they won’t do anything about it,” said Jeffries.

The Animal Control officer decided the dog’s life "isn’t in danger by being outside"; however, just last Friday, January 12th, San Antonio was the site of a chained dog attack in which 10-year-old Amber Jones was killed by a chained dog she tried to untangle. Dogs chained outside are not only in danger of death by cold or other predators, but often present a danger in return to children around them.

Dogs Deserve Better implores those with dogs chained or penned to bring them into the home and family, and urges all citizens to report dogs who are suffering immediately. Do not stop trying to get help for the dog regardless; the dog’s life depends on it.

Dogs Deserve Better will aid any caretaker who agrees to bring his/her dog into the home and family. The organization will help with housetraining, purchase a crate for housetraining use, or donate fencing as funding permits. They ask all citizens to contact local TV and radio stations as a reminder to call for dogs to be brought out of the cold, and to ask these stations to run a free Public Service Announcement donated by the organization.

In an effort to help dogs suffering in the cold, the group has designated Valentine's Week, February 7-14th, "Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week,” and will deliver a Valentine, a brochure and a treat coupon to dogs living outside all over the U.S. and into other countries where they have representation.

Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, states “I am in mourning for the senseless loss of the life of this dog, as well as the other nameless, faceless dogs dying in this cold. We must act together to stop the loss of life due to the negligence of chaining.”

Artist Releases "Love Is...A Day without Chains" in Honor of Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week

Artist Releases "Love Is...A Day without Chains"
in Honor of Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week

Tammy Grimes, Artist and Founder of Dogs Deserve Better,
Debuts New Piece Seeking to Raise Standards of Care for Man's Best Friend.

Tipton, PA, January 8, 2007—Tammy Grimes, artist and founder of Dogs Deserve Better, has released her latest work entitled "Love Is...A Day without Chains" in honor of Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week, February 7-14. "Love Is...A Day without Chains" seeks to raise the consciousness of what is acceptable in our society and how we care for Man's Best Friend.

Grimes, who will stand jury trial in spring 2007 for her efforts to save a dying chained dog, stands firm in her belief that each of us must be held responsible for taking care of our companions. When that responsibility is taken lightly or dismissed, America's pets are the ones who suffer and die.

"We are all caretakers on this earth. It is unacceptable to me that anyone, man or woman, would leave a dog to die on the ground for three days and not be held responsible for that action or inaction. "Love Is...A Day without Chains" puts forth the belief that a day will come when every life will be valued. We've made dogs our companions; now we must take responsibility for giving them the live they need and deserve."

Grimes holds a B.A. in Visual Art and Design from the University of Maryland, and a B.A. in Naturology from AIHT. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Naturology from AIHT, as well as working as an artist and Executive Director of Dogs Deserve Better.

50% of all profits from sales of "Love Is...A Day without Chains" will benefit Dogs Deserve Better through Febuary 28, 2007. Other art sales continue to donate 20% of proceeds. The artwork can be viewed at http://www.littlegirllooking.com/loveisadaywithoutchains.html.

Grimes can be reached at 814.941.7447 or Tammy@littlegirllooking.com for comment, and is available for art shows, commissioned works, or interviews.

Dogs Deserve Better was founded in 2002, is an international nonprofit with 150 area reps in the U.S., France, and Canada, and works to bring dogs out of the backyard into the home and family. The site can be viewed at http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org.

Group Sets Goal of 8,000 Valentines in Fifth
"Have a Heart for Chained Dogs" Week, February 7-14

Seeks Elementary School Students, Clubs, Groups, and
Individuals to Make Valentines for Delivery to Chained Dogs Nationwide

Altoona, PA, 6 January, 2007—Dogs Deserve Better, a nonprofit working to bring dogs into the home and family, has designated February 7-14th "Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week," and has set a goal of 8,000 Valentines to be delivered to chained and penned dogs in its fifth year running the program. DDB is seeking students, groups, and individuals to participate by creating Valentines for the chained dogs and mailing them to the organization's headquarters in Tipton, Pennsylvania.

The group is raising awareness for chained and penned dogs in a positive way...by delivering Valentines, a brochure and a treat coupon to dogs living outside all over the U.S. and into Canada. In the 2006 "Have a Heart for Chained Dogs" campaign the group delivered 5277 Valentines to chained or penned dogs.

Tammy S. Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, states, "We were ecstatic last year to see an incredible response to our plea. We received a total of 5,971 Valentines from 119 different groups and individuals, along with some tremendously touching letters, such as this one from Jessica Smith of Illinois, who wrote: 'I work with chemically dependent males age 12-18, and I thought making Valentines for Dogs Deserve Better would be a wonderful way for them to tie service work into their treatment.'"

Another letter came from Brenda Trojanoski, Connecticut: "We are a 4-H group that loves dogs. Each Valentine was hand made by us, and pleads with the dog's owners to bring their dogs in. We know you will pass along these Valentines to the dogs who need them most."

Grimes continues,"The students and groups gain a sense of accomplishment from creating for the dogs, and our hope is that more and more dog caretakers are educated as a result of the children's efforts."

Valentines are needed at the Dogs Deserve Better headquarters in Tipton, PA by February 7th. The group is also seeking coupons for free or low-cost dog treats to include with their packets. To participate by creating Valentines or mailing coupons, send them to P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684. Interested parties may e-mail info@dogsdeservebetter.org, or call 814.941.7447 for further details.

Dogs Deserve Better invites volunteers and groups nationwide to deliver Valentines to local chained dogs. The group is greatly in need of addresses for chained/penned dogs, and sponsors for the program.
